Fresh from her studio in Wetherby, Ruth Buchanan's exciting new body of work exhibits a contemporary expressive style utilising dynamic colour palettes and carefully constructed, bold compositions.

As an established equestrian and figurative artist, the horse is still Ruth's central theme and the work benefits from her knowledge of anatonly and biomechanics, honed by regular life drawing over many years.

" The music, literature, art and film that appeal to me personally are those that work on many levels. Utilising that layered approach in my work, I aspire to inspire the viewer to their own conversation with my artwork - one that they may return to many times."

b i o g r a p h y

Ruth Buchanan is a full-time artist and author whose work features globally in the Private Collections of notable names in The Arts and Equestrianism. She exhibits in galleries, open and association exhibitions, as well as at International Horse Events. She undertakes a limited number of commissions each year. Born in London and raised in Northampton, Ruth has been based in Yorkshire since completing her bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design with an Illustration Major and a First for Art History. Following a career as a Graphic Designer & Illustrator, then five years teaching 'A' and Diploma level Print Media, Ruth became a full-time Professional Artist in 2001. In addition to producing her artwork, Ruth has taught internationally and writes articles for British and American Art Magazines on wide-ranging subjects including: figure drawing; painting horses and other animals; her ‘Ten Approaches to Drawing’; watercolour techniques; and colour theory. Ruth's book 'Hoof, Hide & Heart: The Art of Drawing & Painting Animals', was published in 2019. Ruth is a Full Member of The Society of Equestrian Artists , a Signature Member of The Institute of Equine Artists, a member of the International Watercolour Society (British Isles), and has served on the committee of the Association of Animal Artists. Ruth lives and works near Wetherby, West Yorkshire.
